The question is: Will the next president be the intentional twin of Elias Hrawi or unintentional clone of Emile Lahoud ?
Trying to answer this question, I would like to share with you readers some archives considering the election of Emile Lahoud himself back in 1998.
1. The Council of Maronite Bishops, headed by Cardinal Nasrallah Boutros Sfeir, praised Lahoud's election as president, while expressing reservations about "the way the choice was made."

A smart marketing campaign was organized to guarantee General Lahoud's election, and it was clear that if he didn't become president, there would be frustration in the country. There was a wide-scale attack against the political class in Lebanon, which made it easy to attack this class, because of the wars between its various sides. 3. Whether Gemayel will gravitate to the nationalist opposition camp headed by Aoun or seek to accommodate himself to the regime remains to be seen. Gemayel's opposition to the Lebanese government and its Syrian sponsors has hardly been unequivocal. Even when he has been most critical of the regime, Gemayel has expressed a willingness to cooperate with President Lahoud. Indeed, he has met twice with Lahoud since his return to Lebanon last year and had been openly calling for a third appointment in recent months. He is fond of telling reporters that he is open to cooperation with the president, though "not at any price."

Lebanon's Christian community, which in recent years has experienced a profound ebb in influence and morale, is particularly pleased with this outcome, and Maronite Catholic Patriarch Nasrallah Sfeir has called the President a "clean, disciplined" individual with "sharp patriotic sentiment".The Mufti of Lebanon, Sheikh Mohammed Rashid Qabbani, has lauded the "wisdom" of the Lebanese people for having chosen General Lahoud as their president. One prominent business-leader has referred to President Lahoud as "the right man, with the right values, and the right background" for the job, and spoke of him as "a man of institutions with a high level of respect for the law."

5. The French Foreign Ministry's spokesperson said, "France warmly congratulates President Lahoud, and wishes him much success. We are confident that the very close relationship between France and Lebanon will keep its intensity, and grow in a friendly and trusting environment.
US State Department Spokesman James Rubin said the US welcomed Lahoud's election, noting that Lahoud was credited with restoring the Lebanese armed forces, adding that, "This same energy and determination will be required as he and the government of Lebanon work together to build and reinforce state institutions and continue the process of national reconciliation and reconstruction."
Candidate for Lebanon's presidency Butros Harb stated that he will visit Damascus soon for consultations concerning the coming presidential elections.

What people don't understand that in politics alliances are not carved in stones, they change all the time and new alliances are forged. What amazes me the fact that when the jebha was formed they claimed that they will try to reunite the christians but it seems from all the articles here they are trying to side with the opposition. I wonder why don't u post articles about Aoun remarks before and after he came back to Lebanon. He called Lahoud the appointed WALI from damascus, how come he became KALBO lal wali?

In France, you have the right and the center-right in the power and in the opposition you have the left parties allied but you have also the extreme right, the center and also the extreme left. So, in Lebanon also, we can be against the "loyalists" and not allied with the "opposants".
For now, the Liberty Front has 14 points and is neither with the "loyalists" nor with the "opposants":
اننا ومن موقعنا الثابت، ومن موقفنا الراسخ، نصر ونؤكد، على المسلمات التالية :
1- لا نرضى لوطننا وشعبنا، اقل من تحرير كامل، وسيادة شاملة، على كاملة مساحة الـ 10452 كلم 2.
2- نرفض توطين الفلسطينيين في لبنان، تحت اي ظرف، وتحت اية ذريعة، وفي المقابل، فإننا ندعم الفلسطينيين في حقهم بالعودة الى وطنهم،وفقا لمنطق الحق، وانسجاما مع قرارات الشرعية الدولية.
3- نريد الدولة القوية، والعادلة، بمؤسساتها الدستورية، والقادرة بقواها الشرعية المسلحة، حماية الحدود، وحفظ الامن، وترسيخ الاستقرار، ورعاية الديموقراطية، وصون الحرية، وتحصين السلم الاهلي على امتداد مساحة الوطن. ونرفض بشكل قاطع اية محاولة للعودة بالبلاد الى منطق الأمن الذاتي.
4- العيش المشترك المسيحي الاسلامي، نعتبره ثابتا من ثوابتنا، وأقنوما نحرص على عدم المس به، اوتهشيمه، تحت اي ضغط او ذريعة او مشروع، كما نؤمن، ان المجتمع اللبناني المتعدد الثقافات، والموحد مدنياً، لا ينمو الا في اطار النظام الديموقراطي التوافقي، وباعتماد مبدأ المناصفة في السلطات على ان نسعى لايجاد صيغة جديدة قائمة على المساواة والعدالة الاجتماعية، صيغة تدوم ولا تتعرض للاهتزاز عند اول منعطف.
5- نحرص ان يبقى الدور المسيحي رائداً في الكيان اللبناني، وفي تعزيز وحدة أبنائه وانفتاحهم الحضاري، ولا نقبل به تبعياً ولا نريده، الا كريما فاعلا في حاضر لبنان والشرق ومستقبلهما، كما كان في كل الحضارات، وعلى مرّ التاريخ.
6- الانسان بالنسبة لنا، هو غاية الغايات، لانه مخلوق لذاته، حياته قيمة مطلقة، وحقه بالعيش بحرية وكرامة، هو الهدف الاسمى، لكل عمل سياسي واقتصادي واجتماعي.
7- ان عملية البناء لا تقوم الا عبر الإصلاح والمشاركة الفاعلة، وفق قواعد العدالة، ومعايير الديموقراطية. وهذا يتطلب اول ما يتطلب، قانونا عصرياً للانتخابات النيابية، قانونا يعكس صحة التمثيل، ويعطي للصوت قيمته الحقيقية، فيعاد انتاج السلطة من جديد، على قاعدة التوازن الحقيقي، والتكافؤ والانصاف. فيُرفع الغبن والإجحاف، ويزول الإحباط، الذي تسبب بهم، التطبيق المنحرف لاتفاق الطائف.
8- نطالب وبإلحاح، بعودة سريعة لجميع المهجرين، بضمانة الدولة وقواها، عودة كريمة شريفة، خالية من اي منّة او استجداء، عودة تعيد كل الحقوق، الى اصحابها، عودة منصفة، تساوي بين المهجرين في المكان والزمان والتعويضات.
9- نرى ان الجنسية اللبنانية هي حق لمستحقيها، من الأسر او الأفراد التي انبثقت من جذور واصول لبنانية، ولمن بذل جهوداً خيرة، او سجّل صفحات عزّ للبنان، وبالتالي لا يجوز التفريط بقدسيتها ونبلها. من هنا، نطالب وبإلحاح بضرورة استرداد قانون التجنيس الذي صدر في العام 1994والغاء مفاعيله لغير المستحقين.
10- ان الاصلاح الاقتصادي، ما لم يسبقه اصلاح سياسي، كمن يقارع طواحين الهواء. فالمطلوب خطة اصلاحية علمية، تراعي واقع موارد الانتاج المحلي، خطة تعمل لصالح التطوير والتنمية، لا خطة تفرّغ الدولة من مواردها.
11- في الواقع السياسي القائم، نود ان نؤكد بداية، اننا وإن كنا في الطابع والهوية حركة مسيحية، فنحن طلاب توحيد وانفتاح على باقي القوى، نحن طامحو عمل سياسي ووطني على الساحة الوطنية.
12- نتطلع الى جيل الشباب والناشئة، على انهم المستقبل الزاهر والزاخر بالعطاء، فلا نريد لهم الا ان يعوا خياراتهم على قاعدة تغليب منطق العقل. كما نريد لهم ان يستفيدوا من تجارب من سبقوهم، وان يمسكوا بشعلة القضية اللبنانية في مسيرة الإبقاء عليها مضاءة ومتوهجة كرامة وعزة وعنفوانا، من جيل الى جيل، وان يثمنوا ادوارهم في حماية لبنان الرسالة الذي هو اكثر من وطن
13- نتطلع الى المغتربين اللبنانيين، على أنهم الجزء المنتشر ما وراء البحار، والذي لا يقل وطنية واندفاعا، في سبيل خدمة وطنه ومصالحه، والدفاع عن قضاياه، في عواصم القرار. وأيضا على أنهم المحرّك الفعلي، للدورة الاقتصادية، في أزمان المحن والبحبوحة على السواء. من هنا، فإننا نطالب بمنحهم كل الحق، في المشاركة في الحياة السياسية اللبنانية، وفي صناعة القرار.
14- أخيرا... في موضوع العلاقة مع سوريا. اليوم، وبعدما زال الاحتلال، نريد لهذه العلاقة ان تكون، كأي علاقة طبيعية للبنان مع باقي الدول العربية، واضحة في التعاطي من دولة الى دولة، مرسمّة الحدود، تخضع لآليات العلاقات الدبلوماسية الصحيحة والصحية، وتخدم في آن، خير الدولتين والشعبين المتجاورين. كما ونطالب بالإفراج عن جميع الأسرى اللبنانيين في السجون السورية، وعلى رأسهم رفيقنا بطرس خوند، وبإعادة النظر بالاتفاقيات غير المتكافئة بين الدولتين في ظل الوجود العسكري المحتل.
من هنا نعلن، ان يدنا ممدودة لجميع المخلصين والشرفاء، فكما بيّنت التطورات والأيام صوابية مبادئنا وخياراتنا، وصدق مواقفنا، نعد الجميع، اننا بالصدق نفسه، سنطبع حركتنا ومواقفنا، لنبني على صخر صلب، الحاضر المرتجى والمستقبل الواعد.
عذرا أيها الرفاق والاصدقاء، لقد أطلت واستفضت، لكن لا يظنن احد انه شوق واشتياق للكلام، فنحن لم نكن ولن نكون يوما طلاب إطلالات ومعتلي منابر بسبب وبلا سبب لنؤكد اننا موجودون، أو أننا حاضرون. نحن سعاة حوار وتحاور وانفتاح، نحن مؤمنون بالديموقراطية وبمنطق قبول الآخر وتفهم هواجسه، نحن عشاق حرية، وطامحو سيادة، وأمن، وسلام، واستقلال.
يا شباب، تاريخكم حافل بالتضحيات، والحاضر شاهد على صفاء عقيدتكم، والمستقبل بإنتظار خطواتكم وتطلعاتكم
الكل على موعد عند مفترق الديموقراطية القائمة على قاعدة مؤسساتية، حضارية في إمتدادها، لا إقطاعية ولا عشائرية ولا وراثية المشورة منارتها، لا تفرد ولا استعلاء، ففي إتحادكم قوة وثبات، وفي حضوركم هوية وطن.
